Radon Information and Detection

radonhouse

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, second only to smoking. It is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. You cannot see, smell or taste radon.
The EPA states, fix your house if the radon levels are above 4 pCi/L. Salt Lake County’s average is 4.3 !!!
The national indoor average is 1.3. The only way to know if you have elevated radon levels is to do a test.
If a house has elevated levels they can be reduced to below 4. Always!
Call Advocate Inspections to have you house tested.
We serve the Wasatch front, Salt Lake, Park City, and Utah County and northern Utah.

John died at the age of 39. He was a nonsmoker. His house had high radon levels. He is survived by his wife and 3 children. He competed in the 2008 “Can you break a 100” He had 8 golf handicap, but did not break a 100. Listen to his story in his own words.

This 37 year old mother of 3 lost her life to cancer from radon gas.
Radon is real.
Radon causes lung caner.
Radon kills people.

Julie Harris lived in a house with high radon and died from lung cancer. Visit cansar.org and for her stories and video.

Radon gas decays into radioactive particles that can get trapped in your lungs when you breathe. As they break down further, these particles release small bursts of energy. This can damage lung tissue and lead to lung cancer over the course of your lifetime. Not everyone exposed to elevated levels of radon will develop lung cancer. And the amount of time between exposure and the onset of the disease may be many years.

Scientists are more certain about radon risks than from most other cancer-causing substances.
Children have been reported to have greater risk than adults of certain types of cancer from radiation, but there are currently no conclusive data on whether children are at greater risk than adults from radon.
Like other environmental pollutants, there is some uncertainty about the magnitude of radon health risks.
However, we know more about radon risks than risks from most other cancer-causing substances. This is because estimates of radon risks are based on studies of cancer in humans (underground miners).

Long term radon tests are determined by using the radiation impact from radon decay onto a plastic strip. Counting the impacts or divots will yield the radon levels. There have also been studies using plastic reading glasses. If the radon radioactive decay does this to plastic, “What is it doing to your lungs?”

Smoking combined with radon is an especially serious health risk. Stop smoking and lower your radon level to reduce your lung cancer risk.

Your chances of getting lung cancer from radon depend mostly on:
How much radon is in your home-
The amount of time you spend in your home -
and Whether you are a smoker or have ever smoked.

You can fix a radon problem.

Radon reduction systems work and they are not too costly.
Even very high levels can be reduced to below 4 pCi/L, the EPA action level.

Kurt Salomon is certified by both the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB) and the National Environmental Health Association Radon Proficiency Program NEHA-NRPP.. His certifications are both as a radon tester and a radon mitigator. Kurt is also a radon mitigation trainer with the largest US radon teaching organization CERTI.

Radon Fan

The fan must be in the attic or on the outside of the house.

Schematic of typical radon mitigation system. There is penetration hole in the concrete floor, 20 gallons of gravel is
removed, the hole is sealed and run up
through the garage, its attic and roof. The fan is in the attic.

Radon Fan Outside

 Installation with the fan
 on the outside of the
 house.
